2013 Event Recap
HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP
December 25, 2013
In addition to HATT’s monthly membership meetings during 2013, a number of other activities were conducted during the year. Here is a recap:
Memorial Day Parade
The annual parade, sponsored and coordinated by the American Legion, met with beautiful weather. Representing HATT in the parade was “Gen. John Sullivan,” who was in town to dedicate a new historical marker at Hungry Hill. (Sullivan was depicted by historian Kenn Anderson.) The general was carrying the American flag, in an open convertible provided by Bob Baechtold.
Wills Mansion Tours
On June 26 and July 2, the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association hosted 105 HATT members and guests in a tour of the Wills Mansion.
Community Day
On Saturday, July 13 HATT participated in Tobyhanna Township’s Community Day at the Blanche D. Price Memorial Park. HATT member-volunteers, who answered questions about local history, and enrolled new members, staffed a display table.
“The Jennie Wade Story” and “The Civil War Veterans of Tobyhanna Township”
This Summer Lecture Series event hosted almost 70 attendees on July 23 and 25. Patty Forcella gave a professional history of Jennie Wade, the only woman to die in the Battle of Gettysburg. Rick Bodenschatz presented known local Civil War veterans and what life was like in the area. This is the result of his recent two-year research project.
The Manhattan Project
More than 120 attendees learned, and enjoyed, the history of this enormous project on August 22 and 27. This Summer Lecture Series, presented by historian Fred Lehrer, shared both history and perspectives of the project’s impact, then and now.
Excursion to the Lehigh Valley
HATT members and guests traveled via motor coach on September 25 to enjoy the history of three historical venues in Allentown. The extensive “Wheels on America” Museum provided an extensive history of transportation. After a catered lunch in the museum’s Juke Box Café, the group went to the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum to enjoy its magnificent displays, including a special exhibit of Abraham Lincoln, and a lecture complementing this exhibit. The group also toured Trout Hall, the Revolutionary War era home of James Allen, son of Allentown’s founder.
Home for the Holidays ... A Community Musical Celebration
For the third year, HATT’s gift to the community entertained the audience with professional performances. After being snowed out on December 14, the rescheduling on December 21 still provided for both a full program and a packed house. The community enjoyed refreshments following the concert.
