Announcements

Monroe County is having its 175th anniversary celebration this year. Also, from June 23 to 27 the Civil War Road Show will be located at Quiet Valley. It is a huge trailer that will travel the state and we are the first to have it.

July 9 is Community Day at Blanch Price Park – Tobyhanna Township Park, an all-day affair with music and food. HATT will have some artifacts on display as well.

July 13 – Our next meeting at Clymer Library – Discover Blakeslee

Thank you to Jack Dodge, Ron Kehler, John Kaltenthaler and Scarlett Rehrig for refreshments. Do stay and enjoy and visit after the meeting and look at the artifacts on display.

Be sure to visit the display cases in the Post Office and in the library the new display will change to the topic of racing.
Thanks to Fred Lehrer for the post office display.

HATT is now on Facebook – Rick Bodenschatz has set this up.

New Business

Scarlett Rehrig spoke about the growth of HATT, which has increased in attendance at meetings.

The Clymer Library basement is no longer adequate for our archival needs. We need to explore space in the area that will meet our needs. An ad hoc committee is needed to explore the possibilities in the area for our use for meetings, displays, and to store archives. Explore venues in the area. Two people have volunteered to work with Scarlett in this endeavor, Russ Cramer and Chuck Waygood.

Speaker | Doris Zimmerman — Cottage Life

Freddie introduced Doris Zimmerman, Ted Suttmeier’s sister, to speak on Cottage Life. Ted researched and developed the project for today’s presentation. Fred Lehrer assisted with the computer program. Doris thanked her brother for his devotion and dedication in developing the program and to Fred Leher for his assistance.

Doris described the history of the origin of the cottages, the original owners and their families, and the Lutheran affiliation of the owners.
In 1926 about 1500 acres were purchased – portions from the estate of Rufus Miller – by Pocono Pines Assembly and a section plotted for the community and camps for children. One lot per share per member who purchased shares in the development.

Numbers were assigned to each cottage and the designation continues. Cottages were built between 1929 and 1934. Several of the cottages underwent extensive modification but one, called the “Tiltin' Hilton” cottage #18, is abandoned. Eight of the original cottages were described and pictures of the cottages were shown on screen via a Power Point presentation.

In addition to Doris’ presentation, Dotsie McCoy and David Scaer recounted their experiences with cottage life.

Adjournment

Following a question and answer period, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Virginia Foy, Secretary
